Canoe is an advertising technology company that provides software and enablement services to national television programming companies like NBCU, Disney, Fox, Discovery, etc.  Canoe was founded in 2008 by the largest multi-system cable operators (MSOs).  Comcast, Charter Communications, and Cox Communications now own the company. Canoe is looking for an Operations Engineer who will manage and act as a central escalation point for highly critical and/or highly impactful user applications. This person will be responsible for application performance and availability.  The position will monitor application platform using operational metrics, defect, quality, change control, and compliance.  The job will analyze systems, address performance issues, respond to outages and incidents, and prototype and/or develop monitoring tools. The job will involve the production testing of new releases and new applications that are handed off to the operations team.  The goal of the job is to identify and solve issues before they effect users.




Core duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Work with engineering team members and product team to deliver Service Assurance from Canoe Ventures.

  • Be responsible for several critical applications essential for the efficient and effective operation of an advertising ecosystem reaching nearly 40 million homes.

  • Identify and solve issues through system/data analysis and monitoring.

  • Extract data using SQL, BASH or similar from database/logs.

  • Manipulate using SQL, Excel, Grafana or similar.

  • Render quantitative analysis with numeric presentation; produce visual presentation of numeric result using available tools.

  • Highlight observed operational failures and propose workarounds/solutions.

  • Work with MSOs (Video Distributor/Cable Operators), 3rd party systems, and customers in support of Video On Demand Digital Advertising Insertion (VOD DAI) goals.

  • Proactively identify system and operational improvements using quantitative and/or qualitative cost/benefits reasoning.

  • Participate in problem solving with software development, integration/test and product teams to improve operational excellence.

  • Responsible for identifying operations defects and interact with software engineers to capture and relay the operational impact.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:                                      

BS in STEM field; prefer 1-5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Minimum of 1 year experience as an Operations Engineer in a software field. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.

  • Very strong proficiency with SQL, BASH, Grafana, Excel, and PowerPoint.

  • Familiar with operations methodologies.

  • Experience working on team that applies an Agile or Lean development methodology.

  • Experience working with customers and databases.

  • Experience using software that uses enterprise databases, e.g. Oracle, HBase, and MongoDB.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:                                            

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret user stories and industry specification documents.  Ability to write test cases, plans, and reports and product documentation.  Ability to participate orally on conference calls and in meetings.


REASONING ABILITY:                                        

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.



  • Intermediate+ Skills in MS Office Suite.

  • Proficient using enterprise databases and table structures.

  • Proficient with communication protocols.

  • Understands scripting language such as BASH, Shell, VB.
